Xunantunich means Stone Lady or Lady of the Rock. The site is located in the western part of Cayo District. It was also called Benque Viejo, because of the town with the same name nearby.

It's most prominent building is called El Castillo (The Castle), it is 130 feet high (40 m). This was mostly a ceremonial center.
