It is the country’s largest district and hosts the ruins of Tree Falls, El Pilar, Cahal Pech, Xunantunich, and the most important Mayan site in Belize, Caracol. The country’s capital Belmopan is located here, but unless you have work here, and related to the government, you can skip it. Guanacaste National Park is located in Cayo also, near Belmopan. It has place called Blue Hole, but it is not the famous reef of Belize, is a lagoon with the same name. The population of Cayo District is 63,900 (2004 according to City Population website ). It has an extension of 2,006 square miles (5,196 square km). It is the biggest district in the country It's capital is San Ignacio has a population of 16,100. Belompan, the capital of the country is also located here, with a population of around 12,300, but growing fast. |
